Garlic
Garlic is a fine herb and a king of the culinary scene. The chances are you are only aware of it's pungent delicious flavor that enlightens even the drabbest cooking, but as you tuck into that moorish slice of garlic bread you feel you probably shouldn't have, you may not realize just how much good it's doing you, so the next time you are faced with that dilemma just eat it!!! And let the natural goodness of garlic ooze through your body.
Of course the best thing about garlic is that it is easily added to cooking, so unless you have a natural aversion to it or are a vampire!!, there is no reason why you can't mix it in with your food according to taste, as even the tiniest amount will do you some good. The best method is to take the garlic bulbs and crush them finely. However if a fresh garlic is not readily to hand then there are numerous powdered garlic's in the shops for even simpler addition, though not as obviously as good or as naturally high in healthy properties as the real thing, they still contain enough goodness to do the job.
And if that isn't enough then there are also easily ingestible garlic capsules that should be taken as a supplement once or twice a day, depending on the advice of a medical practioneer.
Garlic capsules do also have the benefit of not giving you "garlic breath", probably one of the only downsides to regular garlic consumption!! When you swallow.
Garlic is a proven tonic in the repair of nerve endings, the workings of the coronary system, as a general pick me up for nervous debility and for sexual impotency.
In more specific terms it should be taken to:
Lower cholesterol levels
Reduce the risk of both high blood pressure and blood clots
Produce the healthy red cells that can fight and kill things such as tumours
Regulate the workings of the stomach and the whole digestive tract
Ensures the smoothing running and flow of the blood circulation
These are battles that any of us are constantly fighting and thus garlic should be ingested regularly to combat them.
But garlic can also fight off diseases and complaints such as,
Whooping cough
Earache
Flatuance
Colic
Fertility problems
Conditions caused by a lack of minerals in the body
Intestinal worms and other similar parasites
If garlic is not a regular staple of your diet and you are struck down by one of these afflictions, you are strongly advised to ingest garlic in whatever form for at least as long as the condition remains.
The reason for all this goodness and ability to create well-being is the appearance of Allicin within garlic. This main property of the herb has the amazing ability to fight infection once it has been ingested into the body. It can do this because it has the strength to block off all unhealthy enzymes in the body and in doing so prevents them taking hold in the body and spreading.
Garlic is such a wonderful curing herb that if it wasn't natural you'd have to invent it, and probably make a fortune by doing so!!
Ginger
Ginger, derived from a root plant, is a common and particularly popular herb. In western culture it tends to be used in making sweets or biscuits, the ginger nut being a perennial favorite through the generations.
But in Eastern cooking it finds its place traditionally as an ingredient in more savory culinary delights and is an important herbal supplement.
Where it fits best nobody knows for sure, but undoubtedly its tangy taste suits either. Though to really get the best out of the root it is said it is best fried as when it hits the oil and they absorb into one another not only does the taste spread but also the properties found within that promote good health.
Because what is also beyond doubt is the natural goodness it provides when eaten and no matter how you ingest it you should do so regularly.
It is also readily and cheaply available and has been for centuries from your local corner shop, through greengrocers to the big supermarkets. If you're not getting your ginger you certainly can't use lack of availability as your excuse!!
The ginger root contains anti-bacterial products that when ingested into the body becomes a potent weapon in fighting the spread of diseases and virus and can be taken with garlic to provide extra power when you are struck down with afflictions such as colds and flu.
According to ancient Chinese medicine doctrines and practices the best way of taking ginger to cure such fevers is to brew it into a nourishing tea, which when mixed with honey and lemon becomes not only a nourishing beverage but also a highly tasty one too. This has the effect of causing sweating which in turn purges the body of its viral complaints and discharges mucus. It also keeps the immune system in tip-top shape and is highly recommended.
This method is also encouraged to be drunk by women when they are experiencing period pains and is also being trialed as a possible remedy for morning sickness.
Why ginger is so highly effective in dislodging such complaints from the body is quite simple. Its properties give off a warming effect that stimulates the immune system and in doing so gets it working to its full maximum once more.
The above methods all concentrate on ginger being a foodstuff, but it is more versatile than that as it can also be turned into an essential oil which can be massaged into a troubled region of the body.
Its warm stimulus is particularly useful in treating muscle cramps, which occur when the muscle is cold and overworked.
Another complaint bought on by the cold are chilblains and yes you've guessed it a soothing rub of ginger will cure them as well!!
By rubbing it into your spinal column near the kidneys you can ensure that your digestive system is also getting gingers full benefits.
And finally its wonderful warm healing talents are the perfect tonic to chase away depression and the blues in general. You can ingest or massage the ginger produce for this.
You probably already knew that ginger tasted good, but maybe not how good this amazing body tonic and stimulant really does.

Holy Basil (Tulsi)
Holy basil should not be confused with the more commonly known basil, though they are cousins. Whereas basil is a leaf used to enliven cooking, holy basil is a clove like plant with a hairy appearance that has special significance in Hinduism and can very often be found growing wild in thick clusters around temples in India, which is more of a healing product than a culinary ingredient. Traditionally anyway, as there is a growing fashion to use Holy basil in cooking, particularly in the USA where chefs pioneered this new found usage.
But keeping with its more traditional uses, Holy basil is an ancient remedy with particular reverence in the Ayurvedic philosophy.
Ayurvedic prescribes Holy Basil as an agent of perspiration and as such it is recommended that the herb is taken having being brewed up into Kapha tea. It can then work in the body and sweat out feverish ailments such as the common cold and sore throats. When taken in this fashion it also has the effect of clearing blocked passageways and so is able to clear up bronchial disorders efficiently and safely.
The juice of the Holy Basil should also be applied to an afflicted area to combat skin disorders, particularly those such as ringworm and other similar complaints.
It also has particular qualities which seem able to relax the body and give a feeling of the calm within a person when it is taken which enables Holy Basil to be used successfully as an anti-stress supplement and it is in this way it should be used for greater effect. Indeed it has been proven to be more successful in relieving stress then the more commonly known, better available and thus more frequently taken ginseng and it is said to be safer too with no known side effects.
Holy Basil is very much an emerging herb, certainly to the world outside of India and its' full benefits for a healthy lifestyle have yet to be fully explored, its' de-stressing attributes are beyond doubt, but increasingly there is some evidence that it can be equally effective when prescribed as a painkiller, an anti-inflammatory medicine, a treatment for all bacterial, fungal and viral infections and perhaps what will become eventually its' most important usage, there is evidence that it can help lower and control blood sugar levels, which would not only make it a refreshing revitalizing tonic for all, but more specifically and significantly means that it could well end up being a common prescription in the treatment and alleviation of diabetes.
It should be said that these treatments are only at the trialing stage at the moment but there does seem to be good evidence and proper hope that Holy Basil can become a first-class treatment and a naturally healthy one to boot for all of these afflictions and complaints.
Maybe India is about to lose its' best kept herbal remedy to the whole world, which can only be a good thing for everybody else.
Shilajit
Asphaltum is a natural mineral rich in healing qualities that is found and picked in the rocks of the Himalayas during hot weather and is a mass of organic vegetable matter mixed fibres and earth matter.
And it must be good and natural because the Monkeys that inhabit the region eat it also to cure ailments and most of our evolutionary cousins go onto live to a ripe old age!!
This unusual and in many parts of the world largely little known and seldom used fungus, complete with its own unique and slightly unpleasantly pungent aroma, is very high in healing properties. Indeed it is claimed by doctors in the know to be able to cure most ailments. Which is some boast!!
Asphaltum does have some remarkable powers and is an extract that can be used to clear ailments from the whole spectrum of bodily dysfunction.
It can used as an antiseptic, laxative, rejuvenation tonic, respiratory stimulant, disinfectant, aphrodisiac and diuretic, amongst others and those are just the ones people have tried!!
The diseases and complaints it is said to either cure totally or alleviate are:-
Epilepsy
Obesity
Kidney disorders
Menstrual problems
Asthma
Hemorrhoids
Jaundice
Sexually transmitted diseases
Asphaltum is particularly important in treating diabetes, where it has a good record of treatment of secondary diseases arising from diabetes, renal stones, bladder and urinary disorders, TB, leprosy, bronchitis, anemia and general debility.
It is even said to have the powers to heal bone fractures and too even cure insanity, but maybe here it is best to treat such claims as slightly insane in themselves!!
The recommended dosage and best way to ingest Asphaltum Shilajit is a quarter of a teaspoon in a glass of milk three times a day. This constitutes a medium dose, if you feel your symptoms are particularly severe it is advised to slightly up the prescribed measurement to a teaspoon per ingestion.
Though Asphaltum is claimed to have tremendous healing powers and it is undoubtedly a very fine treatment for some disorders if maybe not quite as many as its supporters purport, there is a question mark about just how safe it is to take for humans, as many of its components are unsuited and can cause further chaos in a sufferers body if they have a high acidity or febrile diseases.
There are certainly noxious toxins to be found within Asphaltum in its purest form, that is perhaps to be expected for a herb that is little more than an ooze out of rocks and one that goes almost untreated from the mountainside into the suffers digestive system.
So you are advised to only consume Asphaltum in conjunction with another neutralizing herb which can clear away the dangerous toxins from the extract. And you certainly should never take it without it being prescribed by a qualified medical practioneer.
Asphaltum is certainly a highly effective herb in combating many diseases and complaints, though maybe not quite as many as is claimed. However without precaution it can cause as much damage as it solves, so proceed with extreme caution, because even the monkeys get it wrong sometimes!!

Triphala
The herb of Triphala is one of the most popular healing herbs on the planet, with millions per year worldwide taking it in some way to cure their ills.
The main reason for its popularity, besides its ready availability wherever you happen to be, is that it aids recovery from bowel complaints and lowers blood and cholesterol levels primarily, which are all afflictions that many of us fall victim to at some point in our lives.
Triphala should not necessarily be treated as a healing power rather more a preventive one and as a promoter of good health and general well being. A regular intake, maybe as little as twice a week, of Triphala capsules or powder should be enough to keep any major disorder related to the bowel or general digestive system at bay.
This is because the natural Triphala plant extract contains an exceptionally high nutrient count which enables it to perform an almost uniquely superb cleansing and detoxification upon the inner organs, bowel area, digestive systems and all other functions of the body as it dissolves into the bloodstream. If you wish you can think of it giving your insides a very good valeting!! And if you did that twice a week think how spotless your car would be. Now think how cleansed and healthy your body will be after a regular dose of Triphala.
Triphala is a purgative and so makes a pretty good laxative. It has special value in its native India, as not only is it a highly recommended herbal supplement in Ayurvedic philosophy and is part of many of its courses leading to good health, but it also serves as a laxative for vegetarians worldwide but particularly Indian Hindus, as its soft constitution is more suited to these digestive systems than the more commonly found harsher textured laxatives.
This is because Triphala is considered a lubricating bulk laxative, which unlike other laxatives have no chance of possibly damaging the gall bladder when consumed as it has more nutrional value. As a result it acts as a sponge in the bladder gradually squeezing the waste matter outwards, rather than putting the sufferer through a more direct and probably more troubling and taxing purging.
Because of its fine constitution that is easy on the body when ingested, more of a glide from a soft feather duster rather than a harsh scrub from a de-scaler upon your vital organs and also because of its detoxification and cleansing properties, Triphala isn't just prescribed as a laxative but also as a blood purifier. Within it contains particularly high and exceedingly high vitamin C content, linoleic oil and other natural tonic. This magical combination warms the blood up, which makes your entire circulatory system work in perfect order. This easy flow gets the healthy blood cells into creating enough bile to fight off any invading infection within your body.

Boswellia, which is also known, as boswellin or Indian frankincense is from the Boswellia serrata tree that is mostly grown on the dry hills of India. It is found as a standardized powder extract of the gum of the tree, and contains a mixture of Boswellic acids. The anti-flammatory properties of this gummy resin have been made use of for centuries by traditional Indian healers. Nowadays, a purified extract of this resin is packaged in pill or cream form to help reduce inflammation associated with osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
Research on Boswellia Serrata has proven that it has a specific active anti-inflammatory ingredient in its’ Boswellic acids. They help reduce inflammation in several ways. Boswellic acids has pentacyclic triterpenes that help deter the elastase in inflammatory white cells from infiltrating the damaged tissue. In this way, they help the blood flow to the joints. They also help in blocking the chemical reactions that set the stage for inflammation in cases of chronic intestinal disorders like Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis. Boswellia greatly helps in reducing symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It can be either taken internally or applied topically to affected joints. This helps in reduction of inflammation that is associated with joint disorders. They also help in lessening morning stiffness and thus increase the mobility of joints. Unlike other NSAIDS (Non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) like ibuprofen, Boswellia does not cause stomach irritation. It is also effective in the treatment of back pain.
Boswellia serrata, better known as Shallaki, is also known to help combat cancer, digestion and asthma. It combats cancer in a dose-dependent manner and through topical application. It is due to the Boswellic acid’s anti-inflammatory mechanism that it combats antiproliferative and apoptotic effects in the colon cancer cells. An extract of Boswellia is better than mesalamine, a prescription medication that is derived from salicylic acid for treating ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Boswellia serrata is also known to reduce disability sores and pains and the aching and stiffness associated with low back pain.
Another medical benefit of Boswellia is that it helps in improving symptoms of ulcerative colitis (an inflammatory bowel disease), which includes the eradication of abdominal pains, loose stools and the presence of mucus and blood in the stools. It has been proven that prolonged use of Boswellia has none of the side effects on blood pressure, ulcers and the heart rate of gastric irritation that are associated with the prolonged use of the many anti-inflammatory and antiarthritic drugs.
Due to its fragrant properties, it was traditionally used as incense. Boswellia is also proven to be effective in reducing hypertension as it has many cholesterol and triglyceride lowering properties. The nonphenolic fraction of Boswellia also has marked sedative and analgesic action. It is also a well-known household fumigant. One of the wonder benefits of Boswellia is that it also helps in reducing body weight! One more reason for using Boswellia! Most of the NSAIDs that are used for arthritis may help to relieve arthritis pain and inflammation, but in the process, they accelerate cartilage degeneration. In the case of Boswellia, nothing of the sort happens. In fact, it reduces the breakdown of cartilage building blocks that are known as glycosaminoglycans1. Shallaki also helps in boosting tonic and immune effects of the body. Besides being antiarthritic, Shallaki is proven to also have expectorant effects.
Like most medications, Boswellia hasn’t been tested for safety in pregnant and nursing women. So if there is need of taking Boswellia, it is better to consult your practitioner before taking it. Other than pregnant and nursing women, anyone can take Shallaki, regardless of age and gender.
There are rare cases of side effects in the prolonged use of Shallaki, like skin rash, diarrhea and nausea. Like all herbal medicines, Shallaki too has to be taken for at least 3-4 weeks before its actual benefit can be experienced. To experience the full benefits of Boswellia, take it continuously for 3 to 6 months. Of course, individual results may also vary.

The cardamom plant is a root with pods full of seeds, black cardamom being the longest and thus more productive and has many positives properties and usages. It is more commonly found in food and medicines in the modern world, however the Romans and Ancient Greeks crushed it down and fermented it into a particularly pungent perfume, whilst the Egyptians of the same era chewed and used it as a toothpick.
But however you apply it it is certain that black cardamom will provide the function you are prescribing for it.
How it can be used?Within cooking the pod is squeezed until the seeds ooze out and are applied as such to the culinary dish and in this fashion, in a raw and natural state, it is added to and greatly enlivens things such as pulses.
More commonly though it is fried or braised in a pan of boiling oil and left as a flavoring or compound for a main ingredient, very often this will be a curry or a rice dish, to be added to and is mixed for as long as is desirable according to personal taste or the recipe.
Black Cardamom has been around since the very earliest times and its presence is felt and stretches beyond its native Asian origins and has been widely exported, we certainly know that the Ancient Greeks and Romans used it, for almost all of time and as it has spread itself around the world this slightly odd pod with its neutral tasting seeds have been adapted into cuisines around the globe. For instance black cardamom is a major component in Dutch “windmill” biscuits and is also found featuring prominently in many Scandinavian cakes and patisseries and in Russian Liquors.
It is also used to flavor mulled wine and as preservative for articles such as pickles and herrings.
Dual effects of Black cardamom Though it has to be said that Black Cardamom serves more of an herbal supplement in cooking than it does for medicinal purposes, it is still prescribed as a medicine.
Again like its culinary presence it tends to be a background noise, acting as a compound or a key component in a concoction rather than be a prescribed medicine in its own right, it does still find itself being often used for medical purposes, especially as an aid to cleanse the stomach area of blockages and as a combat for flatuance and indigestion.
Whilst on a similar note ancient Indians believed it to be a cure for obesity when eaten raw.
Its most common solo act is as an ancient Arabian aphrodisiac and whilst nobody can absolutely vouch for its potency many have had at least fun trying to prove it!!
